Argentinians Emiliano Grillo and Fabian Gomez are both closing in on qualifying for their first career start at the Cadillac Championship
Doral, Fla. – With the start of the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship six weeks away on March 2-6, 2016, Argentinians Emiliano Grillo and Fabian Gomez are both closing in on qualifying for their first career start at the Cadillac Championship thanks to victories for each player in the first nine events of the 2015-16 PGA TOUR season. Grillo and Gomez would join the best players from across the globe as the Cadillac Championship returns to Trump National Doral.
Grillo and Gomez, separated by nearly 14 years in age, both come from the same course in Argentina – Chaco Golf Club. Both players recognize Jose Coceres, a two-time winner on the PGA TOUR who is also from Chaco, as the player they look up to most.
While they came from the same club, they took different paths to the PGA TOUR winners’ circle. Grillo moved quickly through the amateur ranks and then graduated to the PGA TOUR this season in part thanks to his victory at the Web.com Tour Championship in September. Grillo, 23, then won in his first start as a PGA TOUR member at the Frys.Com Open in a playoff over Kevin Na.
Gomez has played in 133 Web.com Tour and 84 PGA TOUR events since 2005. His playoff victory over Brandt Snedeker at last week’s Sony Open in Hawaii is his second win on the PGA TOUR since June when he won the FedEx St. Jude Classic.
With their recent play, both Gomez and Grillo have moved into the top 10 in the FedExCup standings. Players need to be in the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) on either February 22 or 29 or be in the top 10 on the FedExCup Points List as of February 29. Grillo is No. 32 in the OWGR and No. 8 in the FedExCup. Gomez is at No. 55 in the OWGR, but in better standing in the FedExCup at No. 5.
