Carolina Club Golf Course, Southern Charm in a tropical paradise…

Carolina Club is an 18 hole public golf facility conveniently located just south of Sample Rd. in the small city of Margate, Florida. The golf club is known for its history and tradition, serving as a past qualifying site for he PGA Tour’s Honda Classic and the Nationwide Tour’s Miccosukee Championship. The large and southern style clubhouse stands on a hill and oversees holes #1 and #10. Downstairs, one can find a large proshop and clubhouse (+ 3,000 sq. ft. display of name-brand sportswear) that is ranked among the 100 golf shops in the country, and is definitely the Pros’ choice of fashion. Upstairs, you will also find an expansive Southern plantation-style mansion,  casual and elegant dining rooms as well as banquet facilities. The staff was very courteous and quite attentive.

Carolina Club Golf Course

I have always been impressed with this golf course and its attendants as I visit this place 7 maybe 8 times a year and is always in excellent shape. I love the practice facility and driving range located behind the clubhouse. The lighted driving range and practice facilities are open until 8 pm all year around.

The Review

  • Carolina Club Golf Course
  • 18 hole regulation length course – Public
  • 71 par | 6,735 yards | 141 slope
  • 72.1 rating | Bermuda grass
Carolina Club is a true test of golf precision. The average green size has to be under 3,000 sq.ft and although the course is only 6,735 yards in length it will make you use every club in your golf bag. It has been a rainy July month here in Fort Lauderdale and we were alerted by one of the attendants that the golf course was “cart path only” and the greens maybe slower than usual as they were unable to cut them because of all the rain. Still, I was looking forward a great round at this fabulous facility.

Key Playing Holes
Hole#1 Par 5 (520 yards)
Our journey begins at this easy and short Par-5 measuring 520 yards. The slight dog-leg right hole plays in a east to westerly direction and is always helped by the ocean breeze. There is trouble left of the fairway and also right once you pass the driving range but the wind will help you steer the shot. I placed my 3-wood just to the right side of the fairway and I hit it again to the fringe, no reason to over power this starting hole, I was able to up and down from the fringe to card a nice birdie. Take advantage of this easy hole by aiming to the right side of the fairway away, your second shot needs to be aimed in between the greenside bunkers.

Hole  #9 Par 3 (188 yards)
I have selected this Par-3 measuring 188 yards just because it gave some of us headaches. There is an out-of-bouds area to the left (not in play) and the green is an island green large enough to accommodate most shots. The tee box is away from the swirling wind and today was playing against and my shot landed on a slope short and rolled to the water. It is a visually distracting hole with a bridge to the right and you hardy feel any wind. Club selection is a must and if you are unsure you are better of long than short. I walked out of this hole with a double bogey that ruined an almost perfect front nine.

Hole #15 Par 4 (445 yards)
I have picked this Par-4 measuring 445 yard as a true test of lenght and accuracy. The generous landing area will let you squeeze a few extra yards out of your driver (you will need them) as this magnificent hole usually plays with the wind at your face. Most of us hit mid to long irons to the well guarded green. My drive landed left of the 150-yard marker and I still hit a solid 6-iron against the wind. This is the #1 handicap hole in the course and do not kid yourself… a bogey still a great score here!
Carolina Club is a charismatic golf facility conveniently located in Margate (a city wedged between Pompano Beach and Coral Springs). I have played it in many occasions and I seem to discover new elements after every visit. The golf course is always kept in great condition although today was that rare occasion when mother nature did not cooperate with the superintendent; still, it is a golf course that I highly recommend. It is always great to play a SOUTH Carolina golf course here in our backyard.
Overall Score 8.5 / 10

After not visiting the Carolina course for at least 18 years I went with my wife and a good friend Al. It was in good shape, greens ran true but it is not friendly to players that do not have some kind of decent distance of the tee. There’s a par 5 in the back nine that horseshoes to the left with out of bounds and water crossing that you have to really make two good shots to have a good chance at par. Fun hole #14 hdcp 7.
