Inside the Ropes US Open at Merion
INSIDE THE ROPES US OPEN AT MERION By TOM LaMARRE, The Sports Xchange You won’t be reading about how any of the players in the 113th U.S. Open this week did the last time the second major of the season was played on the East Course at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. That’s because it was in 1981 and some of them were not yet born. One thing you will hear is that a shot-maker is likely to be holding the trophy on Sunday night, based on the fact that among the winners in the five U.S. Opens at Merion were Ben Hogan (1950), Lee Trevino (1971 in an 18-hole playoff over Jack Nicklaus) and David Graham of Australia…

Inside the Ropes Brandt Snedeker
Inside the Ropes Brandt Snedeker By TOM LaMARRE The Sports Xchange Brandt Snedeker has had his chances in the majors, most notably at the Masters in 2008 and again earlier this year, before melting down under the pressure on Sunday. Players talk about going through a process before they finally break through to win one of the Grand Slam events, and Sneds has had enough of it. “I hope the process is over,” said Snedeker, still smarting from shooting 80 to miss the cut last week in the Memorial before he tees it up Thursday in the FedEx St. Jude Classic, then heading to Merion for the U.S. Open. “I’m ready. I feel like my game’s ready. “The biggest hurdle,…

Inside the Ropes – The Memorial Tournament
Inside the ropes – The Memorial Tournament By TOM LaMARRE The Sports Xchange Tiger Woods has won the Memorial Tournament a record five times, but the iconic moment at Muirfield Village comes from none of those victories. The most enduring image from the events at Jack Nicklaus’ course in Dublin, Ohio, is of Seve Ballesteros of Spain spraying champagne from a giant magnum on his European teammates after they won the Ryder Cup for the first time on American soil in 1987. It rubbed many of the Americans the wrong way, but it was a turning point in Ryder Cup history, and not only because the Euros won on the course of the greatest player of all time while he…

USGA and R&A Ban Anchored Putters
USGA and R&A ban anchored putters…. Does this ruling helps the game? Today the USGA and R&A, governing bodies of our sport, announced the adoption of Rule 14-1b of the Rules of Golf, which prohibits anchoring to the club to your body in making a stroke. The new Rule will take effect January 1, 2016. For some, including myself, this decision is very controversial and it hurts our game more than it helps. Do we really need more rules? Long putters have won four of the last six major championships. Keegan Bradley won the 2011 PGA Championship, Webb Simpson won the 2012 U.S. Open, Ernie Els won the 2012 Open Championship and just weeks ago Adam Scott won the 2013…

Inside the Ropes Jason Dufnering
Inside the Ropes Jason “Dufnering” Dufner By TOM LaMARRE The Sports Xchange Unfortunately for Jason Dufner, the most excitement he’s caused this year came from what has become known as “Dufnering.”Dufner, who had a breakthrough season last year on the PGA Tour at the age of 35, was making an appearance at a youth community center in Dallas late in March when a staffer took a picture of him seemingly zoned out while sitting on the floor during a relaxation period. The staffer posted the picture on the Internet and it went viral. “What can I say, I was tired, my back hurt from sitting on the floor, and we were talking about relaxation and focusing,” Dufner explained. ” ……

Inside the Ropes HP Byron Nelson
Inside the Ropes – HP Byron Nelson Championship By TOM LaMARRE The Sports Xchange Inside the Ropes HP Byron Nelson Championship – In 2011, Keegan Bradley ended an American drought of six majors without a victory by winning the PGA Championship. Last year, Bubba Watson captured the Masters and Webb Simpson claimed the U.S. Open title, and for all three it was the first majors championship of their careers. It might be Matt Kuchar’s turn, perhaps as soon as next month in the U.S. Open at Merion. “I think the more comfortable you get winning tournaments, I’ve now got five wins, and I’d like to continue that going,” said the 34-year-old Kuchar, who is playing this week in the HP…

Inside the Ropes – Tom LaMarre
INSIDE THE ROPES By TOM LaMARRE Inside the ropes – When Adam Scott captured the Masters, he crossed his name off the list of best players without a major title. Sergio Garcia, who tied for eighth at Augusta, remains the poster boy. Garcia, whose signature moment still is chasing Tiger Woods all the way to the finish of the 1999 PGA Championship at Medinah, often seems farther from major glory than he was as a precocious 19-year-old. “We all have a chance of winning a major,” said Garcia, who is in the field this week at the Wells Fargo Championship. “I’ve had a couple. It’s just a matter of seeing if it happens at that time or who you go…

Inside the Ropes – Tom LaMarre
INSIDE THE ROPES By TOM LaMARRE The Sports Xchange Inside the ropes – Bubba Watson’s one-year reign as defending Masters champion is over and he enjoyed the ride as much, if not more, than most first-time major champions. Watson is playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, his first tournament since tying for 50th in the Masters two weeks ago and then putting the Green Jacket on his successor, Adam Scott. “You know, it’s been a crazy year, a great year, golf and off the course,” said Watson, whose life might be starting to get back to some sort of normal. “But you know, coming back, it was fun, defending champ, I got to bring a guest,…

PGA Tour in Spanish…..Really!
PGA Tour in Spanish… A Cadillac Championship initiative PGA Tour in Spanish is just around the corner. Golf is currently facing one of its biggest worldwide expansions to date and with it a huge economic boost from emerging markets. Last week we witnessed fourteen year-old Chinese golf sensation Tianlang Guan made history by becoming the youngest player to make the cut during a major championship (77th Masters Tournament in Augusta). Yes, golf is rapidly growing in both Asian and Latin American markets and the PGA Tour is already testing and making the necessary adjustments to keep up with new market demands. One of these adjustments was launched right here at home during last month’s Cadillac Championships at Doral, a Live Spanish…

Inside the Ropes – Tom LaMarre
INSIDE THE ROPES By TOM LaMARRE The Sports Xchange Inside the Ropes – When Carl Pettersson captured the RBC Heritage last year, a title he defends this week, it was a popular victory in Sweden and the Carolinas. After all, this is the guy that Jesper Parnevik nicknamed the “Swedish Redneck,” and with his fifth PGA Tour victory Pettersson equaled Parnevik for the most by a Swedish-born player. Even of he has lived most of his life in North Carolina. “I haven’t lived (in Sweden) since 1987,” said Pettersson, who came to the United States as a teenager because his father was an executive for Volvo and was transferred. “Yea, I know I’m Swedish. I’ve spent the majority of my…

Inside the Ropes – Tom LaMarre
INSIDE THE ROPES By TOM LaMARRE Inside the ropes – Bookies from Las Vegas to London have made Tiger Woods a prohibitive favorite to win the Masters this week. Of course, Woods has had almost everything to do with it, winning three times already this season and six times in 20 PGA Tour events dating to the 2011 Arnold Palmer Invitational, where he broke a three-year-losing streak. Perhaps the primary factors have been Woods, once again No. 1 in the World Golf Rankings, being the healthiest he has been in several years and getting a putting tip from Steve Stricker before the WGC-Cadillac Championship. “If I get healthy, I know I can play this game at a high level,” Woods…

Inside the Ropes – Tom LaMarre
INSIDE THE ROPES By TOM LaMARRE Had Ian Poulter played in a bygone era, he might be a multiple major champion by now. The 37-year-old Englishman is one of the best match players in the world, and from its inception in 1916 until 1957, the PGA Championship was contested in match play. He simply was born too late. Poulter, who makes his final tune-up for the Masters this week in the Valero Texas Open, captured the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in 2010, beating Paul Casey in the final, and reached the semifinals before finishing fourth in 2005 and earlier this season. In 2011, he defeated Luke Donald to win the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain, and tied for…

Inside the Ropes – Tom LaMarre
INSIDE THE ROPES By TOM LaMARRE The Sports Xchange Inside the ropes – It’s been well-chronicled through much of his career that Tiger Woods is chasing Jack Nicklaus, or more specifically the Golden Bear’s record of 18 major championships. Much closer on Woods’ radar is Sam Snead’s mark of 82 PGA Tour victories, as he is second on the list with 76 after winning the WGC-Cadillac Championship for the seventh time, on six different courses, two weeks ago. And Tiger can tie one of Slammin’ Sam’s records this week if he can successfully defend his title and capture the Arnold Palmer Invitational for the eighth time. Snead won the Greater Greensboro Open eight times between 1938 and 1965, four times…

INSIDE THE ROPES By TOM LaMARRE The Sports Xchange Inside the ropes – When Justin Rose defends his title this week in the WGC-Cadillac Championship, the TPC Blue Monster at what is now Trump Doral Resort will play host to a PGA Tour event for the 52nd consecutive year. And perhaps for the last time as we have come to know the course, which was designed by Dick Wilson and opened in 1962. It was retooled by Jack Nicklaus in 2002. After real estate mogul Donald Trump bought the property last year, he signed up course designer Gil Hanse to retool four of Doral’s five courses, the exception being Greg Norman’s Great White Course. The renovation will begin soon after…

Inside the Ropes – Tom LaMarre
INSIDE THE ROPES By TOM LaMARRE The Sports Xchange Inside the ropes – No longer does the Honda Classic get lost in the shuffle on the Florida Swing of the PGA Tour. The tournament, which will be played for the 42nd time this week on the Champion Course at PGA National, in the past tended to be overshadowed by the Players Championship, which has moved to May, the Arnold Palmer (formerly the Bay Hill) Invitational and the old Ford Championship at Doral (which now hosts the WGC-Cadillac Championship. Greg Norman used to say that the season did not start until the PGA Tour reached Doral, for years the opener of the Florida Swing, but the Honda Classic has thrived since…

INSIDE THE ROPES By TOM LaMARRE The Sports Xchange Inside the Ropes – Rory McIlroy hasn’t said much since leaving Abu Dhabi last month after missing the cut with his new Nike clubs, but plenty of others have been talking about him. While the No. 1 player in the World Golf Rankings has been off with instructor Michael Bannon trying to get a feel for the new sticks, he has been a topic of conversation ahead of his return this week in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. Some have voiced concern, while those who know him best don’t seem worried.Nick Faldo first expressed that it was “dangerous” for the 23-year-old McIlroy to make changes while at the top of his…

Rocco Mediate captures Allianz Championship
Rookie star Rocco Mediate captures Allianz Championship Boca Raton, FL Champions Tour rookie player Rocco Mediate birdied the last hole in regulation play to finish with a 1-under par 71 to capture the 2013 Allianz Championship on Sunday. Rocco Mediate finished with a total at 17-under 199 becoming the 16th player to have a winning debut on the Champions Tour. Mediate started the day with a comfortable 3-shot lead, but half way thru the day the lead had vanished. Tom Pernice Jr bogeyed the par-4 17th from a greenside bunker. Mediate re-gained that lead with a birdie on the par-5 closing hole. “I’m ecstatic,” Mediate said. “I have been saying all week it’s never easy. It shouldn’t be easy. I…

Inside the Ropes – Tom LaMarre
INSIDE THE ROPES By TOM LaMARRE The Sports Xchange Inside the Ropes – When Luke Donald shows up at Riviera Country Club this week, he surely will meet the media, but there won’t be any laser light shows ala Rory McIlroy, and there might not even be standing room only, as often is the case with Tiger Woods. However, as the Englishman makes his 2013 debut on the PGA Tour in the Northern Trust Open, he’s always more than happy to fly under the radar, with much more attention given to Woods and McIlroy — the only players ahead of him in the World Golf Rankings. “Players like Rory and Tiger come around once in a lifetime,” Donald said recently….
