Jeb Bush announced as Honorary Chairman of World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship
Written by Umberto Bernardini – Doral, Fla. – Tournament officials today announced that former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has accepted the role of honorary chairman of the 2014 World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship when golf’s global summit returns to the newly renovated Trump National Doral ®, March 6-9, 2014.As the tournament continues to focus on melding its status as a top golf event into that of a must-attend social, entertainment and sporting event in South Florida, Bush’s involvement as Honorary Chairman will assist in uniting community support of the event and in turn, directly affecting the already impactful charitable footprint that the Cadillac Championship has in South Florida each year.
“I’m delighted to join the Cadillac Championship team and look forward to helping the event continue to raise its profile in South Florida and beyond,” said Bush. “The opportunity to combine my love of golf with my love for the State of Florida – all for the benefit of local charities – was too good to pass up, and I can’t wait to see what we can do together for our neighbors in need.”
Bush served as the 43rd Governor of Florida for two terms, from 1999 to 2007. Bush is the son of George H.W. Bush, the 41st U.S. President, and the brother of George W. Bush, the 43rd U.S. President. The Bush family has a strong connection to the game of golf. Jeb Bush’s great-grandfather, George Herbert Walker, was president of the USGA in 1920 and founded the Walker Cup during his tenure, which remains today as one of amateur golf’s most beloved events, and his grandfather Prescott Bush was president of the USGA before becoming a U.S. senator in 1952. George H.W. Bush was honorary chairman of The Presidents Cup 1996, served as the first honorary chairman of The First Tee in 1997 and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2011. George W. Bush served as honorary chairman of The Presidents Cup in 2005 and succeeded his father as honorary chairman of the First Tee in 2012.
One of his many philanthropic endeavors, Bush started the Jeb Bush Florida Classic 18 years ago and has raised more than $6 million, helping to fund the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s cutting-edge research and top-quality care and leading to the development of new drug therapies and an increase in median life expectancy for CF patients.
“On behalf of the PGA TOUR and International Federation of PGA Tours, I’d like to thank and welcome Jeb Bush to the Cadillac Championship team,” said Finchem. “His commitment to Florida is obvious, and his charitable spirit is second to none. We’re excited to have him as part of this incredible event.”
