Coral Springs resident Lexi Thompson wins her first major…
Thompson, 19, shot an spectacular 4-under-par 68 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., to win by three shots over Michelle Wie. Thompson, who started the final round tied for the lead with Wie, grabbed an early lead and never let go finishing 14-under 274. This was Lexi’s third victory in her past 12 LPGA tournaments and the fourth of her career.
“It’s a great feeling. This is what I’ve worked so hard for. This was one of my goals coming into the year, to win a major. I’ve always seen myself winning a Kraft Nabisco. It’s such a huge honor with all the history behind the tournament. It’s just a dream come true”
Thompson birdied the first hole to take the lead and added three more birdies on the front nine to go ahead by as many as five shots. Wie kept it interesting with birdies on Nos. 11 and 14 to get within three shots, but Thompson made nine straight pars, driving the ball beautifully and rolling in every putt she needed to make.
Wie: “She played amazing today. She played probably the best I’ve ever seen her play. She hit the ball so well. She made everything. It was just hard to catch up to her all day today, but I’m really happy for her. I’m really proud of her. She really played well today, and I thought I played okay, too. I think it just got to a point where I just tried to force it. I think I needed to really come back with a lot of birdies, and I think it got to a point where I just tried too hard. But I’m just proud of myself for how the week went, and I think she did amazing today. That’s really what happened”
With this win Lexi Thompson becomes LPGA’s second youngest major championship winner, short only of Morgan Pressel, who won on the same title at Mission Hills Country Club course in 2007 at age 18.
