Renovated Blue Monster course makes players think or swim, eventual tournament winner Patrick Reed was only one of three players under par for the championship…
Doral, FL — It was an all familiar Sunday as Tiger Woods dressed in a red, Phil, Bubba and Dustin Johnson lurked around the leaderboard but in the end Patrick Reed
was the only player able to tame the “new” Blue Monster. Reed was able to gain momentum with back-to-back birdies early on the front nine to build a big lead and showed off a great short game when the pressure was building on the new Blue Monster at Doral. With a two-shot lead, the 23-year-old Texan wisely played the final hole conservatively. He two-putted for bogey and closed with an even-par 72 for a one-shot victory over Bubba Watson and Jamie Donaldson of Wales.
“I was hitting the ball so good this week, I felt like, and you know, my putting was just outstanding. Whenever you’re able to come to an event and feel very comfortable with your putting it allows you to let a lot of the pressure on your full swing kind of come off your shoulders. Around a golf course like this you have to be confident and I felt like I’ve done that really well.”
Patrick Reed 68-75-69-72—284 (-4)
Bubba Watson 73-72-72-68—285 (-3)
Jamie Donaldson 74-70-71-70—285 (-3)
Richard Sterne 74-73-70-71—288 (E)
Dustin Johnson 69-74-73-72—288 (E)
Patrick Reed, who entered the final round with a two-stroke lead over Jason Dufner and Hunter Mahan, carded a final-round even-par 72 for a one-stroke victory over Bubba Watson (68) and Jamie Donaldson (70).
